The purpose of this historical figure project was for students to find out information about former students or faculty members and discover their impact here, at Winston Salem State University and towards STEM. WBA Room 210 is a well known classroom and our group came across a plaque that read “Herrell Lecture Room” Dr. Astor Y. Herrell years of service was 1979-2005, almost 30 years of service at WSSU.  Throughout our research, we discovered that Dr. Herrell was invited to join a three regional workshop in 1981 that involved an opportunity for Air force research. In addition, Dr. Herrell help start the chemistry and medical technology programs here at Old State U. Without Dr. Herrell’s impact on WSSU and STEM, our chemistry department would have taken longer to create and or not been available here at Winston.
